Discover Morella and Peñíscola, the two jewels of Castellón.
After a two-hour drive from Valencia, crossing beautiful landscapes of the Levantine coast, we'll catch a glimpse of the silhouette of a city that stands majestically, evoking medieval times. This is the start of our visit to Morella, an imposing walled town, whose vertical construction will surprise you from the very first moment.
A accredited local guide will lead us through the narrow, steep cobbled streets, so characteristic of the town. The first stop will be at the famous castle overlooking the town, a 12th-century Islamic fortress that has witnessed numerous battles and historical events. Here, you can learn about the significant influence of Morella in the time of the Crown of Aragon and how it was a vital strategic point during the Reconquest.
The castle offers not only a journey through history, but also impressive panoramic views of the surrounding area, ideal for photography lovers. Among its former guests is none other than the legendary Cid Campeador.
We will continue our guided tour of Morella with the Convent de San Francesc, where you can admire its impressive gothic architecture. This former Franciscan monastery stands out not only for its beauty, but also for its historical and religious significance in the region. We will also visit the Esglèsia de Santa Maria la Major, considered the most beautifulgothic church in the Valencian Community, with its imposing façade and rich interiors that bear witness to Morella's glorious past.
After this cultural immersion, we'll give you free time to explore at your own pace. Stroll through the streets, visit the local craft shops and don't forget to try the typical Morella cuisine* in one of the town's cosy restaurants.
*Lunch is included in the price and consists of a typical Morella menu. If you have any allergies or special dietary requirements, such as vegetarian/vegan, please mention this when booking the excursion.
After a tasty lunch in Morella, we'll head east to discover Peñíscola, a town that perfectly combines history with Mediterranean charm. This coastal town is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for its rich history, dating back to ancient times. Film buffs and movie buffs will recognise some of the streets and corners of the town, as it has been chosen as a filming location for several movies and series such as Game of Thrones.
On our visit to Peñíscola, the first thing that will catch our attention will be the imposing castle, located on top of a rocky crag that juts out into the blue sea. It was built by the templars and later became the residence of Pope Luna, one of the most enigmatic and controversial popes in history, who used it as his palace and personal library. Hence Peñíscola is known as the city of Pope Luna.
We will continue our guided tour through the old town, where traces of the past are evident at every turn. Here, the architecture reveals layers of history, with Muslim, Roman and Templar influences interwoven into the city's structures.
Afterwards, we will visit outside emblematic sites such as the Casa de las Conchas, famous for its façade decorated with shells from the sea, and the Bufador, a natural phenomenon where the sea bursts through a cave creating an impressive spectacle.
Our walk will also take us along the former city walls that protected the city, contemplating the contrast between the intense colour of the sea and the blue and white tones of the picturesque houses of the old town, creating a landscape that looks like something out of a postcard.
After a full day exploring the wonders of Morella and Peñíscola, we will return to Valencia in the afternoon.
